If you’re looking for teen anxiety and depression support in Roswell, GA, you may be noticing changes that are hard to put into words. Your teen might seem more irritable, withdrawn, overwhelmed, or constantly worried even if they’re still “doing fine” academically or in their extracurriculars. Many parents notice increased stress around school, perfectionism, social pressure, or overthinking that slowly builds until anxiety or low mood starts to take over.

At Kind Heart Counseling, I offer in-person teen anxiety and depression therapy in Roswell for adolescents who feel stuck in their heads, hard on themselves, or unable to slow down. Therapy is gentle, relational, and CBT-informed, with a focus on helping teens feel safer in their bodies, develop coping skills, and build confidence navigating everyday stress, emotions, and expectations.

What Anxiety & Depression Can Look Like in Teens

Anxiety and depression in teens doesn’t always look obvious. Many of the teens I work with are high-achieving, sensitive, or deeply self-aware and they often keep things inside. Parents may notice subtle changes in behaviors or mood even when their teen is still showing up for school or activities.

Teen anxiety and depression may show up in overlapping ways:

  • Constant worrying, overthinking, or “what if” thinking

  • Perfectionism, self-criticism, or fear of making mistakes

  • Irritability, withdrawal, or emotional shutdown

  • Loss of motivation, low energy, or feeling disconnected

  • Avoidance of school, social situations, or activities they usually enjoy

  • Difficulty sleeping or relaxing

  • Physical symptoms like stomach aches, headaches, or muscle tension

Parents often sense that something is off but aren’t sure how to help without making things worse. Therapy can offer a neutral, supportive space where teens don’t have to perform, explain everything perfectly, or carry everything on their own.

A Compassion-Focused, Nervous-System-Informed Approach

My approach to teen anxiety and depression therapy is grounded in compassion, mindfulness, and nervous system awareness. Many of the teens I work with are thoughtful, perfectionistic, and hard on themselves, and their distress is often tied to patterns of overthinking, emotional overcontrol, or constant pressure on themselves. Rather than trying to eliminate anxiety or low mood, we focus on helping teens understand their internal experience and respond to it with more flexibility and self-trust.

I utilize different therapeutic modalities including:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help teens identify and challenge unhelpful thought patterns

  • RO-DBT–informed strategies for teens who are perfectionistic or emotionally guarded

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to support values-based choices and emotional flexibility

  • Compassion-Focused Therapy to reduce harsh self-criticism and build self-kindness

  • Mindfulness and body-based awareness to support emotional regulation and stress tolerance

  • Creative and experiential interventions which allows for flexibility and creating a strong connection to the therapeutic skills

This approach is especially helpful for teens who feel overwhelmed, emotionally guarded, or stuck in cycles of overcontrol and self-judgment.

Why This Approach Works for High-Achieving Teens

Many of the teens I work with appear “fine” on the outside. They’re responsible, thoughtful, and used to holding things together and they often take longer to warm up in therapy. Parents frequently share that their teen doesn’t open up easily or insists they’re okay, even when something clearly feels off.

My approach is intentionally paced and relationship-focused. Rather than pushing teens to talk before they’re ready, therapy creates a steady, supportive space where we can build trust naturally. Over time, teens begin to feel safer exploring their thoughts, emotions, and pressures without fear of being judged, rushed, or misunderstood.

This is especially helpful for teens who:

  • Feel pressure to perform or “be okay”

  • Tend to minimize their struggles

  • Are highly self-critical or emotionally guarded

  • Need time to feel comfortable opening up

By meeting teens where they are and moving at a pace that respects their nervous system, therapy becomes a place where real change can happen even.
